Maria Plastira-Valkanou studied Classical Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (First Degree 1979), at Birkbeck College of the University of London and at the Rijksuniversiteit of Gent, Belgium (Ph. D. 1987). She has taught at the Department of History of the Ionian University (1987-1988), at the School of Theology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1988-1990) and at the School of Philology, Department of Classics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as a Lecturer from 1991 till 1998 and as an Assistant Professor from 2000 till today.

Her research and teaching interests focus on Epigrammatic Poetry, Ancient Greek Novel, Epos, Historiography and Hellenistic Poetry.
