The Department of Linguistics of the School of Philology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is pleased to announce that its 40th Annual Meeting will be held in Thessaloniki on Αpril 5-6, 2019. The Meeting welcomes high-quality contributions to the study of the Greek language from any linguistic perspective.

The 40th Annual Meeting’s keynote speakers are Professor Robyn Carston (University College London) and Professor Raymond W. Gibbs Jr. (University of California, Santa Cruz).

Those interested in participating with a presentation are invited to submit, as PDF files, two copies of their abstracts, one anonymous and one signed, to, by December 20, 2018, indicating whether the submission concerns an oral or a poster presentation. The anonymous copy should not contain self-citations. Submissions should conform to the following format specifications:

Length: up to one A4 page (excluding bibliography)
Font: Times New Roman 12pt
Space: single
Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) all sides
For the signed copy: title, author(s), affiliation, email address (centered)
For the anonymous copy: title (centered)

Papers may be in Greek or English. Oral presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a 10-minute discussion. Each participant is entitled to only one (single or joint) presentation.

Thematic sessions

The Department wishes to give colleagues with common research interests the opportunity to organise up to five two-hourly thematic sessions. Colleagues interested in coordinating a thematic session should submit a proposal specifying the session’s theme, describing the theme’s significance, and including the names of at least three session participants, together with abstracts of their respective presentations (abstracts should conform to the format specifications given above). Other things being equal, priority will be given to session proposals not submitted by members of the Department.

Pre-conference postgraduate workshop 

A pre-conference postgraduate workshop will be held on April 4, 2019. Postgraduate and doctoral students are encouraged to submit an abstract in any area of linguistics. Literature review papers will not be accepted for presentation. Papers accepted for presentation may be submitted for publication in the Meeting’s Proceedings.

Registration fees

Authors of single or joint presentations accepted for the main session or the thematic sessions must each electronically pay a registration fee of 50 € before 18/3/2019 or a registration fee of 40 € before 22/2/2019. Authors of single or joint presentations accepted for the pre-conference post-graduate workshop must each electronically pay a registration fee of € 25 before 18/3/2019. Bank account details will be included in the notifications of acceptance.

Desk registration will only be available for participants without a presentation (regular registration fee 40 €; student registration fee 20 €).
