Department of Classics


The Department of Classics has a special educational and academic agreement with the Department of Classics of New York University (NYU).

The Department of Classics is an active participant in the European Program for Higher Education and Academic Mobility Erasmus. We have bi-lateral agreements withe following institutions: Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat Heidelberg, Universita degli Studi di Macerata, Nicholaus Copernicus University, Universite de France-Compte, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Universite de Caen, Julius-Maximilians-Universitat Wurzburg, Universita degli studi di Udine, Universidade de Coimbra, University of Bristol, University College London, Universidad de Granada). At present, 56 students are enrolled in the M.A. Program (30 in Ancient Greek Literature and 26 in Latin Literature), and 31 in the Ph.D. Program.

The Department of Classics organizes on a regular basis colloquia, and series of lectures with visitors from Greece and abroad. During these last years some of our invited speakers were: R. Buxton (Bristol), R. Fowler (Bristol), G. Hutchinson (Oxford), M. Fantuzzi (Macerata and Columbia), F. Montanari (Genova), S. Hornblower (UCL), G. Most (Scuola Normale di Pisa and Chicago), M. Lefkowitz (Wellesley College), Hugh Lloyd-Jones (Oxford), E. Bakker (Yale), B. Zimmermann (Freiburg), Richard Hunter (Cambridge), Greg Nagy (Harvard), Heinz-Gunther Nesselrath (Gottingen), David Konstan (NYU), David Sider (NYU), Phil Mitsis (NYU).

The Department, starting from 2007 organizes every year an International Conference on Modern Trends in Classics, whose revised proceedings are published by the Press Walter de Gruyter in the series Τrends in Classics Supplementary Volumes (editors: F. Montanari and A. Rengakos).

Members of the Department of Classics participate in the publication of the series Key Perspectives on Classical Research (εκδότες: Patrick Finglass, Simon Malloch και Christos Tsagalis: Walter de Gruyter) and the journals Trends in Classics (editors: Franco Montanari and Antonios Rengakos), Philologus - A Journal for Ancient Literature and its Reception (editors: Sabine Föllinger, Therese Fuhrer, Tobias Reinhardt, Jan Stenger and Martin Vöhler), Yearbook of Ancient Greek Epic(editors: Jonathan Ready and Christos Tsagalis) and Hölderlin Yearbook (editors: Johann Kreuzer, Sabine Doering and Martin Vöhler).

Collections:
The departmental library has a full collection of ancient Greek and latin texts (OCT, BT, Belles Lettres, Loeb, etc.), epigraphical corpora and papyri, a rare-books collection of 2000 volumes (including 500 volumes of the Pallis donation), 250 microfilms of Greek manuscripts (mainly from the 10th to the 12th century), bibliographical databases, journals, and audio-visual material.

3. On-Line publication of the Derveni Papyrus, scientific consultant K. Tsantsanoglou (in co-operation and with full financial support by the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University).
4. On-Line publication of inscribed epistomia, scientific consultant Y. Tzifopoulos et al. (in co-operation and with full financial support by the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University).
