44th Annual Meeting of the Department of Linguistics

44th Annual Meeting
Department of Linguistics, School of Philology
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
31 May 2024

The Department of Linguistics, School of Philology, and the Institute of Modern Greek Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are pleased to announce the 44th Annual Meeting to be held in Thessaloniki on May 31, 2024. We invite contributions in the field of:

Greek lexicography

Over the past 25 years, Greece has witnessed a profound transformation in its lexicographical landscape. This change has been marked by the emergence of significant dictionaries such as the Dictionary of Modern Greek [Λεξικό της Νέας Ελληνικής Γλώσσας] by G. Babiniotis, the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek [Λεξικό της Κοινής Νεοελληνικής] by the Institute of Modern Greek Studies, and the Dictionary of Modern Greek Usage [Χρηστικό Λεξικό της Νεοελληνικής Γλώσσας] by the Academy of Athens. Furthermore, ongoing endeavors include projects like the Dictionary of Medieval Vulgar Greek Literature [Λεξικό της Μεσαιωνικής Ελληνικής Δημώδους Γραμματείας] by E. Kriaras or the translation of works like the Etymological Dictionary of Ancient Greek [Ετυμολογικό Λεξικό της Αρχαίας Ελληνικής] by P. Chantraine.

To emphasize the scholarly aspects of lexicography, the Department of Linguistics aims to integrate discussions on these developments into its 44th Annual Meeting. Abstracts focusing on lexicographical issues related to Ancient, Medieval, or Modern Greek, regardless of the dictionary type (definitional, etymological, orthographical, dialectal, etc.), are encouraged. The following themes exemplify the scope for potential papers:

Mrs. Georgia Katsouda, Senior (Grade A) Researcher at the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects of the Academy of Athens, will be the conference’s keynote speaker.
