38th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS

The Department of Linguistics, School of Philology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is pleased to announce its 38th Annual Meeting to be held in Thessaloniki on April 28, 2017. This year’s Meeting focuses on

Ancient Greek, Modern Greek and education

Despite the heated debate over the relation between the Ancient and Modern Greek language and education, the topic has not yet been adequately discussed on a constructive, scientifically-grounded basis. To this end, the Department of Linguistics has decided to accommodate such a discussion into its 38th Annual Meeting. We welcome abstracts which cover all of the above areas (Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, and education) and address issues such as the following:

  • Linguistic approaches to the relation between the (Ancient and Modern) Greek language and education.
  • Theoretical issues regarding the continuity of Ancient and Modern Greek and its implications for education.
  • Ideological dimensions regarding the teaching of Ancient and Modern Greek.
  • Pedagogical perspectives on the teaching of Ancient and Modern Greek.
  • Historical aspects.
  • Previous work and new challenges for the teaching of Ancient and Modern Greek.
  • Political approaches to the teaching of Ancient and Modern Greek.
  • Research, in a classroom setting, with respect to the teaching of Ancient and Modern Greek.

Those who wish to participate in the 38th Annual Meeting with a presentation are invited to submit two copies of their abstracts (one anonymous and one signed) to amgl38@lit.auth.gr by January 10, 2017. Notification of acceptance will be communicated by February 20, 2017. Abstracts must not exceed 400-500 words (including references) and must be submitted in both doc/docx and pdf form. The anonymous copy should be free of self-citations. If necessary, the word “Author” can be used instead, along with the publication date of the article. Submissions should be in the following format:

Font: Times New Roman 12pt
Space: single
Margins: 3 cm
For the signed copy: title, author(s), affiliation, email address (centered)
For the anonymous copy: title (centered)

A total of 30 oral presentations will be included in the conference program. All papers will be allocated 30 minutes (20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for discussion). In addition, a total of 15 poster presentations will be accepted. Please indicate in your email whether your abstract is submitted for an oral or poster presentation, or for the pre-conference graduate workshop.

Each participant is entitled to only one (individual or co-authored) oral presentation.
